I. Introduction
In between the genealogies of Noah's sons, is the nine verse story of the Tower of Babel. At first glance, this tale appears to be a curiosity, almost an afterthought by the writer, who inserted the story into the middle of the genealogies to explain the emerging differences between Noah's sons and their offspring. However, the Talmud says, “It was necessary to tell how the world was divided by language lest we forget that HASHEM [God] is the creator of all things, even languages. Man might look around and see the division and forget that once the whole world was united by the Holy Tongue of Hebrew, the language of God, and that all these people from the many different cultures came from one man, Adam.” The Talmud obviously gives the story greater significance than it first appears.
